In an unexpected announcement, South Carolina Representative Trey Gowdy made an announcement endorsing Florida Senator Marco Rubio for the GOP nomination for President.
Here’s the statement released to reporters:
“Marco is a rock solid conservative and a strong leader we can trust. I look forward to campaigning in Iowa with him, and introducing my good friend to voters across the state.”
This was somewhat of a surprise because some Republicans don’t consider Rubio a true conservative.
Representative Gowdy is a celebrity among many conservatives, thanks to his tough prosecutorial grilling of members of the Obama administration during congressional hearings. And because he’s chaired the Benghazi investigative committee that has centered on Hillary Clinton.
Gowdy’s announcement comes as many grassroots conservatives in Iowa have given their support to Senator Ted Cruz. The latest CBS/YouGov poll showed Cruz leading with 40% support, Donald Trump at 31% and Marco Rubio coming in third with 12% of the Iowa Republican vote.
Do you think that Gowdy’s endorsement of Rubio lessens his credibility as a solid conservative?
