South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham made an incredible statement in an interview on the CBS Sunday show “Face The Nation.” He said that winning the 2016 presidential election should take a back seat to stopping Donald Trump from destroying the Republican Party by becoming its presidential nominee.
The Washington Examiner reports on this incredible statement:
“We can lose an election, but I don’t want us to lose our heart and soul. If we nominate Donald Trump and he carries the banner of the Republican Party, given who he is and what he said about immigrants, about Muslims and young women, we will not just lose the election. We [will] have lost the heart and soul of the conservative movement. That’s what is at stake.
“Donald Trump would be an absolute disaster for the Republican party, destroy conservatism as we know it. We would get wiped out.”
Graham who made little headway in his own presidential bid, is working to help Senator Ted Cruz capture the Republican nomination, although he differs with Cruz on many issues.
It’s incredible for a Republican Senator to say publicly that Donald Trump is a bigger threat to the GOP than Hillary Clinton. While Trump isn’t the most solid conservative, he’s gained a lot of support because grass-roots conservatives are fed up with Washington insiders like Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell not standing up for conservative principles – like cutting federal spending and reducing the size of government.
The Republican Party is already in a civil war, with no guarantee that it will stay together as a viable political entity going forward. If Trump doesn’t get the nomination at the convention in Cleveland, that could destroy the party faster than if he would get the nomination.
Do you think Lindsey Graham is right or wrong saying that Donald Trump is a bigger threat to the GOP than Hillary Clinton?
